Split between the Dutch (Sint Maarten) and French (Saint-Martin) sides, this small island packs in 37 beaches, duty-free shopping, the famous plane-spotting at Maho Beach, and some of the Caribbean’s best food on the French side. It’s warm all year with a classic dry-winter, wet-summer pattern.
General guidance from typical seasonal averages – always check a live forecast before you book. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 (peak August-October); a storm in season is the exception, not the rule, and travel insurance is smart in those months.
St. Maarten: season by season
High & dry season. December through April is the sunny, dry high season – calm seas, buzzing beach bars and the year’s top prices. The Heineken Regatta in March is a highlight.
Hurricane & low season. August through October is the wettest and the peak of hurricane season (Irma hit hard in 2017; the island has since rebuilt). September is riskiest, and prices bottom out.
Shoulder season (best value). May-June and November are warm, mostly dry and far quieter, with noticeably better rates.
What else to know
The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta (March) and Carnival (April-May on the Dutch side) are the big events; Grand Case on the French side is a genuine culinary destination; and the water stays 79-84°F for easy snorkeling.
