The Bahamas is the closest Caribbean-style escape to the US, which makes it perfect for a quick beach fix – but it also sits a little further north, so its winters are a touch cooler and breezier than the islands further south. Timing is about balancing that against crowds, prices and storm season.
General guidance from typical seasonal averages – always check a live forecast before you book. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 (peak August-October); a storm in season is the exception, not the rule, and travel insurance is smart in those months.
Bahamas: season by season
High & dry season. December through April is the classic high season: sunny, low-humidity days in the upper 70s to low 80s, calm water, and buzzing Nassau and Paradise Island – at the year’s highest prices. Winter evenings can feel cool and windy, so pack a light layer.
Hurricane & low season. August through October is the wettest and the peak of hurricane season, with September the riskiest. Rates fall to their lowest and the water is at its warmest, but flexibility and insurance matter most in these months.
Shoulder season (best value). Late April through June is arguably the best overall window – warm, dry, calm seas, and lower prices before the summer family rush and well ahead of storm season. November is a quieter, pleasant pick too.
What else to know
The Bahamas throws its biggest party at Junkanoo, the dazzling street parade on December 26 and January 1. Spring brings calm seas ideal for island-hopping to the Exumas and its famous swimming pigs, and the water warms from the mid-70s in winter to the mid-80s by late summer.
When to go, by trip type
Best for a warm, calm winter getaway December-April; best value and seas in May-June; island-hoppers should target spring.
