General guidance from typical seasonal averages – always check a live forecast before you book. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 (peak August-October); a storm in season is the exception, not the rule, and travel insurance is smart in those months.
Cancún & the Riviera Maya: season by season
High & dry season. November through April is the sweet spot – warm, dry, low humidity, the clearest water and the least seaweed. It’s also the busiest, with spring break spiking in March.
Hurricane & low season. June through October is hot, humid and the peak of hurricane season (September-October riskiest), with the heaviest rain. Prices drop, but keep plans flexible.
Shoulder season (best value). Sargassum seaweed tends to peak May through October, so if pristine sand matters, lean toward December-April. May and November are reasonable-value shoulder months.
What else to know
Whale sharks gather off Isla Mujeres from roughly June to September; Día de los Muertos in early November and the winter holidays are magical; and the cenotes and ruins at Tulum and Chichén Itzá are year-round. Water sits around 79-84°F.
