Cozumel, the island off Mexico’s Riviera Maya, is a diver’s and cruiser’s favorite – the Mesoamerican Reef right offshore, laid-back Mexican charm, and easy access from Cancun. It’s reliably warm, with a dry winter, a hot wet summer, and the same seaweed timing as the mainland coast.
General guidance from typical seasonal averages – always check a live forecast before you book. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 (peak August-October); a storm in season is the exception, not the rule, and travel insurance is smart in those months.
Cozumel: season by season
High & dry season. November through April is the sweet spot: warm, dry, clear water, the least seaweed and the calmest diving conditions. It’s the busy cruise-and-tourist season, so book ahead.
Hurricane & low season. June through October is hot, humid and the peak of hurricane season (September-October riskiest), with the heaviest rain. Prices fall, but keep plans flexible.
Shoulder season (best value). Sargassum seaweed can appear May through October, so for the clearest water lean toward December-April. May and November are decent-value shoulder months.
What else to know
The reef diving and snorkeling (Palancar, Columbia) are world-class year-round; Carnival colors the streets in February-March; and the water stays a warm 79-84°F. Ferries make easy day trips from Playa del Carmen.
