Accommodation Cost

When it comes to planning your trip, choosing the right place to stay is probably one of the biggest parts of your budget, right after your flight. In the Bahamas, you have a variety of places to stay, from budget-friendly hotels to swanky resorts.

If you are considering staying at one of the best resorts in the Bahamas, keep in mind that they tend to cost more than regular hotels. However, when you factor in the cost of meals, transportation, and activities that are included, it can be worth it. On average, you are looking at about $275 to $500 per night, per person for these resorts, though prices can fluctuate based on the time of year and where you are staying. New Providence, especially Nassau, is the most popular island and has a great selection of all-inclusive resorts.

Personally, I love opting for all-inclusive resorts in the Bahamas because they really help you unwind and enjoy your vacation. Namely, I have had a lovely time during my stay at Sandals Royal Bohemian, and I did not have a single worry on my mind. After all, that is what the Bahamas is all about!

If you would prefer something a bit different, traditional hotels and resorts offer more flexibility for your stay. During peak season, you can expect to pay around $210 per night for a double room in a three-star hotel. However, if you are looking for something more upscale, four or five-star hotels offer a range of amenities, but they will generally set you back $400 or more a night.

And for those looking for a budget Bahamas vacation cost, there are plenty of options too! You can find hotel rooms starting around $100 a night. Plus, short-term rentals like Airbnb can provide great value, especially if you are traveling with a larger group!

Best Islands to Visit in The Bahamas

When you arrive in the Bahamas, you may want to explore the surroundings a little bit. If this is the case, I strongly recommend checking out the islands of the Bahamas. 

Exuma

Exuma is a stunning chain of 365 islands famous for its clear blue waters and gorgeous white sandy beaches. One of the highlights is Pig Beach, where you can actually swim with friendly pigs! Seriously, the water there is some of the clearest you will ever experience.

If you are thinking about visiting Exuma, the easiest way to get there is by flying from Nassau to George Town on Bahamasair. They have flights twice a day – one in the morning and another in the evening – and the flight only takes about 40 minutes.

Paradise Island

This island is connected to Nassau by bridges and is home to some luxurious resorts and stunning beaches. If you are looking for sophisticated features during your vacation, this is the place where you will find them. 

Grand Bahama Island

Grand Bahama Island, particularly around Freeport, is a fantastic blend of stunning natural beauty and modern comforts. Being the northernmost island in the Bahamas, it is super easy to get to, yet it still feels like a hidden gem. 

One of the must-see spots is Lucayan National Park, where you can wander through fascinating underwater caves and lush mangrove swamps. It is a great place to connect with nature, and do not forget your camera – the scenery is absolutely Instagram-worthy!

Nassau

Nassau, the vibrant capital of the Bahamas, is situated on New Providence Island and is bustling with life. This city is a hub for nightlife, rich history, and fantastic shopping experiences. You can spend your days exploring historical sites and then hit the famous Straw Market for some local crafts and souvenirs. 

Do not miss out on the opportunity to unwind on Cable Beach. This is the perfect spot to soak up the sun and enjoy the beautiful turquoise waters. Whether you are looking for a fun night out or a relaxing beach day, Nassau has you covered!

Andros

Andros is the largest of the Out Islands, and it is a true haven for those who love the great outdoors. Known for its stunning blue holes and extensive coral reefs, it is a paradise for divers and nature enthusiasts alike. 

You can explore vast national parks filled with diverse wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. The marine life here is simply incredible, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling or simply enjoying the tranquil waters. If you are an adventure seeker or just want to escape the hustle and bustle, Andros is definitely a place you should have on your radar.

And while you are thinking about your island-hopping adventure, do not overlook Eleuthera with its stunning pink sand beaches or Abaco, which is famous for its charming boating community and private islands. Each spot has its own unique charm, and there’s so much waiting to be explored!

Things to Do in The Bahamas

Here is my list of my top 10 favorite things to do in the Bahamas! It is not everything, but I can definitely vouch for these activities. And hey, if your plan is to just chill on the beach the whole time, no judgment here!

Snorkeling

First up is snorkeling at the Andros Barrier Reef, which is the third-largest barrier reef in the world and a paradise for snorkeling fans. If you are thinking about heading out to the reefs with gear, expect to spend around $100 or so.

Swimming with Pigs

Do not miss the chance to swim with the pigs in Exuma. It is an incredible experience! You can book tours through local operators or arrange them through your hotel.

Enjoy The Pink Sand Beaches

Then there are the pink sand beaches on Harbour Island, famous for their stunning pink sand. It’s a gorgeous spot for sunbathing and swimming, easily reachable by ferry from Eleuthera.

Take Advantage of The Golf Courses in Paradise Island

For golf enthusiasts, Paradise Island has some fantastic courses with breathtaking ocean views. There are both private and resort options available, so be sure to contact them in advance to set up your tee time and check the greens fees.

Check Out Junkanoo Beach

Junkanoo Beach is super close to the cruise ship port and always buzzing with activity. You will find plenty of places to grab a bite and pick up souvenirs. Right next to the beach is the famous Straw Market, where you can snag a cool hat! Even though it is a popular hangout, the sand and water are absolutely beautiful.

Charter a Boat in Nassau

If you’re looking for things to do in the Bahamas, consider chartering a boat in Nassau. This is a great way to escape the usual tourist spots and discover secluded beaches and hidden treasures. There are plenty of companies offering half-day or full-day charters, with prices varying depending on the size and amenities. I took a full-day tour that included swimming with pigs, snorkeling, and relaxing on the beach, which cost me $170 USD.

Scuba Diving in the Tongue of The Ocean

For something a little more adventurous, scuba diving in the Tongue of the Ocean is a must. You can dive into a deep trench to see a variety of marine life and coral formations. Dive tours are available for a fee that usually starts around $100, but trust me, it is worth every penny for the underwater sights you’ll experience.

Kayaking in Lucayan National Park

You can also enjoy kayaking in Lucayan National Park, where you can paddle through mangroves and explore caves. It is a lovely and peaceful way to take in nature, but you will need to rent a kayak, which costs about $89 per person for a guided tour.

Relax on Cable Beach in Nassau

If you are looking for a place to unwind, Cable Beach in Nassau has a long stretch of white sand with clear turquoise waters. It is perfect for a laid-back day at the beach, and the public access is free.

Visit Ardastra Gardens and Wildlife Conservation

Finally, consider visiting Ardastra Gardens and Wildlife Conservation Centre. You can take a leisurely stroll through beautiful tropical gardens to see exotic animals and the famous pink flamingos. It is great for families and animal lovers, and there is a $35 entry fee for adults that helps support their animal rescue and conservation efforts.

When Is The Best Time to Visit The Bahamas?

Traveling to the Bahamas can be an amazing experience, but the conditions can change quite a bit throughout the year. Let me break it down for you by the best times to visit, focusing on what matters most during each period.

Shoulder Seasons 

The shoulder seasons are from April to May and October to November. These months offer a nice balance of good weather and smaller crowds. Late spring tends to be a bit warmer, around 75-85°F, and you can find more budget-friendly prices for places to stay. Early fall may see more rain, especially as hurricane season kicks in, but there are still lots of beautiful sunny days. If you are looking to save some cash and still enjoy great weather, I would suggest April or May.

Peak Season  

From mid-December to mid-April, the Bahamas is in its peak season. This is when the weather is just perfect, with temperatures hanging between 72-82°F. You can expect almost no rain, just about 0.5 inches a month, which means plenty of sunny skies and warm waters. This is ideal weather for snorkeling and boating. The catch? This is also when the best hotels in the Bahamas and flight prices soar due to all the tourists. So, you may want to consider planning a higher budget if you want to visit the Bahamas during peak season. 

Hurricane Season 

The hurricane season runs from June to October and peaks in August and September. While the risk of hurricanes is higher during this time, it does not mean the weather is bad every day. Rainfall does pick up, averaging about 6-8 inches a month, especially later in the summer. In my experience, when it does rain, showers are usually quick – around 30 minutes – and then you are back to sunny skies. Plus, temperatures can stay hot, around 85-90°F. If you are after the best deals on hotels and resorts, this time can be a goldmine. Just keep an eye on the weather forecasts and definitely consider getting travel insurance if you plan to visit during this time!

Things to Consider When Visiting The Bahamas

If you’re planning a trip to the Bahamas, here is a quick overview of what to expect! 

Culture

The Bahamas is bursting with culture, showcasing a mix of African, European, and Indigenous influences. A must-see experience is the Junkanoo festival, with its vibrant parades and lively music. You will also come across local crafts at markets, like handmade straw hats and wood carvings. 

The locals are super friendly and love sharing their traditions, so be sure to respect their customs and dress modestly when visiting cultural or religious sites. There is no better way of experiencing a new culture than through locals, so take advantage of what they offer!

Food and Drinks 

When it comes to food, Bahamian cuisine is a delicious blend of flavors, heavily leaning towards seafood. You definitely have to try conch fritters, a local favorite, as well as pigeon peas and rice, often served with pork or chicken. 

Feeling adventurous? Dive into “cracked conch,” the national dish! Dining options range from laid-back beach joints to fancier restaurants. And do not miss out on some authentic Bahamian rum – whether you sip it neat or in a cocktail. My personal favorite spot for cracked conch is Twin Brothers in Nassau.

Nightlife

The nightlife in the Bahamas has something for everyone! In places like Nassau and Freeport, you will find a variety of bars, nightclubs, and beach parties. Many venues feature live music, often showcasing local bands playing Bahamian genres, like reggae and rake-and-scrape. 

So, if you want to see the adventurous side of the island, you definitely want to see these places. However, if you prefer something quieter, consider sipping a sunset cocktail at a beachside bar.

Weather

Expect warm tropical weather in the Bahamas all year long, with average temperatures between 74°F in winter and 86°F in summer. The peak heat months are typically June to August, when it can get close to 90°F with high humidity. 

The rainy season runs from May to October, peaking in June and September, but do not worry – rain usually comes and goes quickly, leaving plenty of sunshine. 

Just keep in mind that hurricanes can happen from June to November, so it is a good idea to check the weather if you are traveling during those months.

Transportation

Getting around is fairly easy, depending on which island you are on. Taxis are a convenient choice, especially if you have luggage, and you can spot licensed taxis by their official plates and decals. Not all of them take credit cards, so it is best to check before you hop in. It is also wise to agree on the fare upfront! 

However, if you are staying in one of the best resorts in the Bahamas, such as Sandals Royal Bohemian, you will be offered free transportation from the airport, meaning you will not have to deal with local taxi drivers.

If you want to save a few bucks, there are buses (or jitneys) available, but I would suggest avoiding them since they can be unreliable and might attract pickpockets. Renting a car is another great option if you want to explore at your own pace. Just remember, they drive on the left side of the road! I rented a car during my trip – while taxis and transfers are plentiful, having that flexibility was nice. For getting between islands, there are ferries and private boats, so just ensure the operator is reputable.

Currency

They use the Bahamian dollar (BSD) as the official currency, but the U.S. dollar (USD) is widely accepted, with both currencies having the same value. Most places take major credit cards, but it is handy to have cash on hand for small purchases or tips. 

You will find ATMs everywhere, but if you need to exchange money, stick to banks or official currency exchanges for the best rates. It is usually not worth changing cash at the airport since the rates are often poor.

Airports

Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport is the main gateway to the Bahamas, offering a mix of international and domestic flights. It is only a 10 to 20-minute taxi ride to get to most places on the island from there. 

Grand Bahama International Airport serves the northern region and is popular with U.S. visitors. Bahamasair is the national airline, providing many routes around the islands, and it is a good idea to book your flights early, especially during busy seasons.

Passport and Visas

To enter the Bahamas, you will need a valid passport. If you are a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you usually do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least six months. If you are from another country, check the visa requirements in advance. It is also a good plan to have a printed copy of your itinerary and accommodation details handy, as you might need to show them upon entry.
