Sandals Dress Code: The Short Answer
Daytime at every Sandals resort is relaxed “resort casual” — swimwear with a cover-up, shorts, sundresses, and sandals are fine at the beach, pools, and casual eateries. Evenings are where the dress code tightens. Most specialty and fine-dining restaurants require “resort evening” or “elegant resort” attire: for men, long pants and a collared shirt (no shorts, tank tops, or flip-flops); for women, a sundress, skirt, dressy top, jumpsuit, or cocktail dress. A handful of signature restaurants ask for “resort formal” — jackets for men at the most upscale rooms.
I’m Steve Griswold, a Sandals Certified Platinum Elite advisor who has personally stayed at all 17 Sandals resorts. Here’s the dress code that actually gets enforced at the door, broken down by time of day and restaurant — so you pack right and never get turned away from a dinner reservation.
The Three Sandals Dress Codes, Explained
Sandals uses three escalating dress levels. Knowing which is which is the whole game.
| Dress Code | When It Applies | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resort Casual | All day at beaches, pools, casual & buffet restaurants | Shorts, t-shirts/polos, swim trunks with cover-up, sandals | Sundresses, shorts, swimwear with cover-up, sandals |
| Resort Evening / Elegant Resort | Most specialty restaurants after ~6 p.m. | Long dress pants, collared shirt, dress shoes or clean closed shoes (no shorts, no flip-flops) | Sundress, skirt & top, dressy capris, jumpsuit, or cocktail dress |
| Resort Formal | Top signature restaurants (e.g., fine French/steak venues) | Dress pants + collared/dress shirt; a jacket is appreciated and sometimes required | Cocktail dress or elegant evening wear |
The single rule that prevents 90% of problems: Pack one pair of long pants, one collared shirt, and one pair of closed shoes for every man in your party. That combination clears you into essentially every Sandals dinner restaurant.
What This Looks Like at Specific Resorts
- Sandals Royal Plantation (Jamaica): This boutique, all-butler property runs the dressiest evenings in the brand. Men should plan on collared shirts and long trousers nightly; women lean cocktail-casual.
- Sandals Dunn’s River (Jamaica): The newest flagship has the most restaurants of any Sandals (12). The signature room, L’Amande, is firmly “resort formal” in the evening — bring the jacket.
- Sandals Royal Barbados: Laid-back resort casual by day; “resort evening wear” after dark at the specialty venues like the on-site GreenHouse.
- Sandals Grande St. Lucian & Sandals Regency La Toc (St. Lucia): Standard resort-evening enforcement at the specialty restaurants; buffets and beachside spots stay casual.
Tip: Dress codes apply to the restaurant, not the resort. You can spend the whole day in a swimsuit and only need to change for your dinner reservation.
What’s NOT Allowed at Dinner (Even at the Casual Resorts)
After 6 p.m. in the specialty restaurants, expect to be turned away for:
- Men’s shorts, sleeveless shirts/tank tops, or athletic wear
- Flip-flops or beach sandals on men
- Wet or visibly beach-worn clothing
- Swimwear of any kind
Sneakers are a gray area — clean, dressy sneakers usually pass at “resort evening,” but not at “resort formal.”
How to Pack for the Sandals Dress Code
For a 5–7 night trip, per person:
- Men: 2 pairs of long dress pants/chinos, 3–4 collared shirts, 1 pair closed dress shoes, 1 light jacket if you’re booking a formal venue.
- Women: 3–4 dinner outfits (sundresses, jumpsuits, or skirt-and-top combos), 1 cocktail dress, 1 pair of dress sandals or wedges.
- Both: Daytime is easy — swimwear, cover-ups, shorts, and sandals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a dress code at the Sandals buffet?
No. Buffets and casual eateries stay resort-casual at every meal, though you’ll want a shirt and footwear (no bare feet or dripping swimwear).
Do I need a jacket at Sandals?
Only at the top “resort formal” signature restaurants at a few resorts (like L’Amande at Sandals Dunn’s River). Most dinners only require a collared shirt and long pants for men.
Can women wear nice shorts to dinner?
Dressy shorts or capris are usually fine at “resort evening” venues, but a sundress, skirt, or jumpsuit is the safer call for specialty restaurants.
What about kids?
Sandals is adults-only (couples). For families, see our Beaches resort guides — Beaches is more relaxed, but specialty restaurants still ask for resort-evening attire after 6 p.m.
