What started as hurricane repairs has turned into a massive transformation. Here’s what travelers need to know about the Sandals 2.0 upgrades coming to South Coast, Montego Bay, and Royal Caribbean.
Sandals Resorts has just announced something much bigger than a rebuild. Following the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa last fall, the company has committed $200 million to completely transform three of its most beloved Jamaica properties: Sandals South Coast, Sandals Montego Bay, and Sandals Royal Caribbean.
The original plan was straightforward: repair the damage and reopen as quickly as possible. But as work progressed, Sandals leadership recognized a rare opportunity. With all three resorts already closed for repairs, this was a chance to go beyond restoration and fully reimagine the guest experience at each property from the ground up.
What’s Changing at the Three Resorts
Sandals is calling this the next chapter of its Sandals 2.0 experience, and the scope is significant. The $200 million investment will bring elevated suite categories, completely redesigned pool areas, brand-new dining concepts, refreshed public spaces, and what Sandals describes as thoughtful enhancements throughout the entire guest journey. If the Sandals 2.0 upgrades we’ve seen at other properties are any indication, guests returning to these resorts should expect a dramatically different experience.
Having personally visited all 17 Sandals and Beaches properties, I can tell you that Sandals South Coast, Montego Bay, and Royal Caribbean are already fan favorites. South Coast is known for its quieter, more intimate vibe along the southern shoreline. Montego Bay holds a special place as the resort that started it all back in 1981. And Royal Caribbean, with its private offshore island, offers something no other Sandals can match. The idea that all three are getting this level of reinvestment at once is genuinely exciting for anyone who loves Jamaica.
Updated Reopening Timeline
The expanded scope does mean the resorts will be closed longer than originally expected. Here are the new target dates:
- Sandals South Coast — November 18, 2026
- Sandals Montego Bay — December 18, 2026
- Sandals Royal Caribbean — December 18, 2026
Jamaica Is Still Very Much Open
If you’re planning a Jamaica trip in the meantime, the rest of the Sandals and Beaches Jamaica lineup is fully operational and welcoming guests right now. Sandals Royal Plantation, Sandals Ochi, Sandals Dunn’s River, Sandals Negril, and Beaches Negril are all open and accepting reservations. Jamaica remains one of the most popular Caribbean destinations, and there’s no shortage of incredible all-inclusive options while the three properties undergo their transformation.
What This Means for Travelers Planning Ahead
If you had your eye on South Coast, Montego Bay, or Royal Caribbean for later this year, you’ll want to adjust your plans. The good news is you have five other Jamaica resorts to choose from right now, and when these three reopen in late 2026, they’re going to be worth the wait.
For anyone willing to plan ahead, booking early for the reopening dates could be a smart move. Newly renovated Sandals resorts tend to generate huge demand, and the first guests to experience the refreshed properties often get the best room selection and introductory pricing.
This $200 million investment is one of the largest single-market commitments Sandals has ever made, and it signals a strong long-term bet on Jamaica as a premier all-inclusive destination. For travelers and the island alike, that’s good news.
