Picking your first Sandals resort is a bigger deal than most people realize. There are 17 properties spread across eight Caribbean islands, and each one has a completely different personality. I have seen it happen too many times — someone books the wrong resort for their first trip, has a mediocre experience, and writes off the entire brand. That is a shame, because when you match the right traveler with the right property, Sandals delivers one of the best vacation experiences in the Caribbean.

I have personally visited every Sandals resort, most of them more than once, and I have helped over a thousand couples pick the right one through Pixie Vacations. Here are my top recommendations for your very first Sandals trip in 2026.

Start Here: Sandals Dunn’s River, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

If I could only recommend one resort for a first-timer, this is it. Sandals Dunn’s River in Ocho Rios is the newest full-scale Sandals resort in Jamaica. It reopened in 2023 after a complete ground-up rebuild, and I stayed there again in December 2025 to check on things after Hurricane Melissa. It looks stunning.

Why it works for first-timers: You get 12 restaurants — the most at any Sandals property — which means you will truly experience the variety that sets Sandals apart from other all-inclusive brands. The rooms are modern and well-designed. The main pool area is gorgeous. And you are close to Jamaica’s most popular excursion, Dunn’s River Falls, if you want to get off-resort for a day.

The flight situation is also favorable. Most US cities have direct flights to Montego Bay, and from there the resort transfer is about 90 minutes. Not the shortest ride, but completely manageable, and the coastal drive through Jamaica is beautiful.

Best for Convenience: Sandals Montego Bay, Jamaica

If you are someone who does not want to sit in a transfer van for an hour after landing, Sandals Montego Bay is across the street from Jamaica’s main international airport. The transfer is about five minutes. You could literally be at the swim-up bar within 30 minutes of walking off the plane.

Sandals Montego Bay has been recently renovated with new room categories and restaurants. It sits on its own private white-sand beach on Montego Bay. With 339 rooms it is a mid-sized resort — big enough to have excellent dining and entertainment options, small enough to not feel like a mega-resort.

For first-timers who are a little nervous about the Caribbean or who just want to minimize travel hassle, the proximity to the airport is a genuine game-changer. Jamaica is also one of the most affordable Sandals destinations, so your first trip does not have to break the bank.

Note for 2026: Sandals Montego Bay is currently undergoing a major Sandals 2.0 renovation and is set to reopen on December 18, 2026 with a completely reimagined property. If you are booking before that date, consider Sandals Dunn’s River or Sandals Negril instead.

Best Beach Experience: Sandals Grande Antigua

Sandals Grande Antigua sits on Dickenson Bay, which is one of the most gorgeous beaches in the Caribbean — and I do not say that lightly after visiting dozens of Caribbean beaches. The sand is soft, the water is calm and brilliantly blue, and the beach is wide enough that it never feels crowded even when the resort is full.

This resort consistently ranks among the top three in Sandals guest satisfaction. It has 11 restaurants, a split layout between the Mediterranean Village (more upscale, with its own pool and concierge) and the Caribbean Village (laid-back, beachfront), and a range of room categories from affordable to splurge-worthy.

For first-timers who want a “wow, this is what all-inclusive should be” experience, Antigua delivers. The flight from the US East Coast is reasonable, and the island itself is friendly and safe for first-time Caribbean visitors.

Best for Relaxation: Sandals Negril, Jamaica

Sandals Negril sits on Jamaica’s famous Seven Mile Beach. The entire vibe here is different from the other properties — slower, more relaxed, more barefoot-in-the-sand. If your idea of a perfect first Sandals trip is lounging on the beach with a cocktail, watching one of the most incredible sunsets in the Caribbean, and doing absolutely nothing productive, this is your resort.

It is one of the smaller Sandals properties, which means less walking and a more intimate feel. The beachfront rooms put you steps from the sand. The fire pits on the beach at night are one of my favorite touches at any Sandals resort anywhere in the world.

Negril also happens to be the Sandals resort where I send the most “we just want to decompress” couples, and the feedback is almost unanimously positive.

Best for a Splurge: Sandals Saint Vincent

If your first Sandals trip is also a special occasion — a honeymoon, a milestone anniversary, or just a “we have been saving for this” splurge — Sandals Saint Vincent is the property that will blow you away.

This is the newest resort in the entire Sandals portfolio, opened in 2024. It sits on 50 oceanfront acres on the island of Saint Vincent and introduced several firsts for the brand: two-story overwater villas with glass floor panels and private plunge pools, rooftop terraces, and a design aesthetic that I call “Sandals 2.0.” The black volcanic sand beaches and dramatic mountain scenery make it unlike any other Sandals property.

With 301 rooms, 11 restaurants, and 9 bars, it has a more boutique feel than the larger Jamaica or Bahamas properties. The food here is genuinely some of the best in the Sandals system.

Saint Vincent is a less-visited island, so your first Sandals experience will also feel more exclusive and adventurous. Fair warning: it is at a higher price point than most Sandals properties, but the product justifies it.

How to Save Money on Your First Trip

After helping hundreds of first-timers plan their Sandals vacations, here are the tips that actually move the needle on price:

Book during value season. Late April through mid-December (excluding holiday weeks) offers rates 30–50% lower than peak season. The weather is still excellent — it is the Caribbean.

Watch for Sandals sales. The brand runs regular promotions with $1,000 or more off. The weekly 7-7-7 deals offer 7% off specific room categories for 7-plus-night stays and can stack with other promotions.

Use a Sandals-certified travel advisor. This is genuinely free and gives you access to deals, room upgrades, and stacked promotions that are not available when booking directly on the Sandals website. My team at Pixie Vacations does this every day.

Consider a luxury room at a great resort over a butler suite at a lesser resort. First-timers sometimes overspend on the room category and underspend on the resort. A standard Luxury room at Sandals Dunn’s River or Sandals Antigua will give you a better overall experience than a butler suite at a property that does not fit your travel style.

Book at least five months in advance. The best rooms sell out, and first-timers often underestimate how popular certain categories are, especially swim-up suites and overwater bungalows.

The Most Common First-Timer Mistake

Booking based on price alone. The cheapest Sandals resort is not always the best one for your first experience. Sandals Ochi in Jamaica, for example, often has the lowest published rates, but it is also one of the largest and most spread-out properties — which can overwhelm first-timers who expected a smaller, more intimate vibe.

Tell your travel advisor what kind of experience you want — relaxing or active, beachfront or pool-centric, intimate or social — and let them match you with the right property. The price difference between a mediocre trip and a perfect trip is often only a few hundred dollars.
