You’ve got a cruise port a few hours down the interstate, and you’re wondering whether your closest cruise port quietly decides where you can go. Short answer: yes, more than any brochure admits. I pulled every sailing leaving 13 U.S. and Puerto Rico homeports in one peak winter week (February 20–26, 2027) — 133 cruises — and sorted them by where the ship actually goes. The pattern is blunt: the port you drive to picks the half of the Caribbean you’ll see.
- Of 133 sailings in the sample week, 43 never left the Bahamas and Florida, and every 7-night cruise from Galveston, New Orleans, Baltimore and New York stayed in Mexico, Central America, Jamaica, Grand Cayman or the Bahamas — nothing east of Jamaica.
- Galveston and New Orleans had zero Eastern or Southern Caribbean sailings that week (0 of 16). The only Gulf ship reaching Aruba was an 11-night from Tampa.
- A 7-night cruise from San Juan averages 5.6 port days; from Port Canaveral 3.9, from Galveston 3.3, from Baltimore 3.0.
- From Atlanta, driving 490 road miles to Port Canaveral costs a family of four about $300 in gas and parking; flying four people to San Juan costs about $2,200 at the Q2 2026 average round-trip fare. An extra cruise night or two is usually cheaper than four plane tickets.

Does your closest cruise port really limit your itinerary?
It does, and the reason is arithmetic, not marketing. A big cruise ship covers roughly 430 nautical miles in a 24-hour sea day (18 knots, around the clock). On a 7-night cruise the farthest island it can reach is about two sea days out — call it 850 nautical miles in a straight line, less when the track has to bend around Cuba or the Yucatán.
Put a compass on the map and the Caribbean splits into three neighborhoods. Cozumel is 490 nautical miles from Miami and 679 from Galveston. St. Thomas is 958 from Miami but 1,761 from Galveston. Aruba is 981 from Miami, 1,123 from Port Canaveral, 1,709 from Galveston, and 423 from San Juan. Those straight-line distances are why the Gulf ports sell Mexico and Honduras, why Florida sells both coasts of the Caribbean, and why the deep south of the map — Aruba, Curaçao, St. Lucia, Barbados — belongs to San Juan on 7 nights and to Florida only on 8 nights or more.
The week I sampled proves it. Here is every departure from 13 homeports, February 20–26, 2027, as listed on the lines’ schedules and read on November 2, 2026. I sorted each cruise by the farthest region it touches: Bahamas/Florida (Nassau, the private islands, Key West, Bimini), Western (Mexico, Honduras, Belize, Grand Cayman, Jamaica), Eastern (Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, Antigua, the Dominican Republic, Grand Turk) and Southern (the ABC islands, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Dominica, Martinique, Panama and Colombia).
What can each U.S. homeport actually reach?
| Homeport | Sailings | Bahamas only | Western | Eastern | Southern | Shortest to Eastern | Shortest to Southern |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galveston | 11 | 1 | 10 | 0 | 0 | none that week | none that week |
| New Orleans | 5 | 0 | 5 | 0 | 0 | none that week | none that week |
| Mobile | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | none that week | none that week |
| Tampa | 7 | 0 | 6 | 0 | 1 | 11 nights | 11 nights |
| Jacksonville | 4 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | none that week | none that week |
| Port Canaveral | 27 | 14 | 5 | 5 | 3 | 7 nights | 8 nights |
| Palm Beach | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | none that week | none that week |
| Fort Lauderdale | 25 | 6 | 3 | 10 | 6 | 5 nights | 8 nights |
| Miami | 37 | 12 | 9 | 12 | 4 | 5 nights | 9 nights |
| Norfolk | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 8 nights | none that week |
| Baltimore | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | none that week | none that week |
| New York / Cape Liberty | 2 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | none that week | none that week |
| San Juan | 10 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 7 | 7 nights | 7 nights |
Every departure listed for Feb 20–26, 2027 on cruisetimetables.com (which mirrors the lines’ own schedules), read Nov 2, 2026. Boston had no departures that week. “Eastern” includes 5-night Grand Turk/Amber Cove loops. Repositioning and back-to-back combinations are counted once each.
Why is there no Eastern Caribbean cruise from Galveston?
Roughly 150 people a month search Google for an “Eastern Caribbean cruise from Galveston.” In the sample week there were zero. Ten of the 11 Galveston sailings went west: Carnival Dream to Roatán, Belize and Cozumel; Norwegian Viva to Cozumel, Roatán, Harvest Caye and Costa Maya; MSC Seascape and Symphony of the Seas to Costa Maya, Roatán and Cozumel; Liberty of the Seas on 4- and 5-night Cozumel and Costa Maya runs; the Disney Magic on 5-night Cozumel and Progreso loops. New Orleans was the same story on 5 of 5, with Mariner of the Seas adding Grand Cayman and Montego Bay.
The geography is the whole explanation. From Galveston, St. Thomas is 1,761 nautical miles in a straight line, and the ship cannot sail a straight line — it has to round the Yucatán Channel and pass south of Cuba. That is four sea days each way. The one Galveston ship that broke the pattern was Carnival Jubilee’s 8-night to Nassau, Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key — Carnival spending an extra night to sell Texans something other than Cozumel. It is the only “east” you can drive to from Dallas or Houston, and it still never gets past the Bahamas.
Honest take for Texas and Louisiana readers: the Western Caribbean is not a consolation prize — Cozumel’s reefs, the ruins out of Costa Maya and Belize’s barrier reef are the best shore days in the region for the money. But no amount of waiting will make a 7-night from Galveston reach St. Maarten or the Virgin Islands. You fly to Florida or San Juan, and the money section below tells you whether that is worth it.

Which ports reach the Southern Caribbean — Aruba, Curaçao, St. Lucia, Barbados?
Three answers, in order of how much vacation time they cost you.
San Juan, 7 nights. Seven of the 10 San Juan departures in the sample week reached the Southern Caribbean, and they did it with 5 or 6 port days: Celebrity Constellation and Crown Princess to St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Antigua, St. Lucia and Barbados; Norwegian Prima to Tortola, St. Kitts, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Maarten and St. Thomas; Virgin’s Valiant Lady to Tortola, St. Lucia, Barbados, Dominica and St. Maarten. The catch is that nobody drives to San Juan.
Florida, 8 to 10 nights. From Fort Lauderdale, Legend of the Seas did Aruba, Curaçao and Cabo Rojo on 8 nights; Celebrity Silhouette added Bonaire on 9; Celebrity Ascent did St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Grenada, Barbados and Antigua on 10. From Port Canaveral, Carnival Vista reached Curaçao and Aruba on 8 nights and Explorer of the Seas did all three ABC islands on 9. From Miami, Freedom of the Seas needed 9 nights for Aruba and Curaçao. Not one Florida sailing reached the Southern Caribbean in 7 nights.
The Gulf, 11 nights. The only Gulf-coast ship to reach Aruba that week was Norwegian Gem out of Tampa on an 11-night that also hit Great Stirrup Cay, Cabo Rojo, Curaçao, Falmouth and Grand Cayman. That is the whole Southern Caribbean offer from Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and west Florida in a peak February week: one ship, one sailing, a week and a half.
How many port days do you lose by sailing from a northern port?
Here is the number almost nobody checks before booking: how many of your seven nights are spent looking at water. I counted port days (any stop other than the homeport) on every 7-night cruise in the sample week and averaged them by homeport.

A 7-night from San Juan averaged 5.6 port days — 1 or 2 sea days all week. Port Canaveral’s 7-nighters averaged 3.9 (Disney Treasure, Norwegian Epic and Mardi Gras all did 4), Miami 3.6, Tampa 3.5, Fort Lauderdale 3.4, New Orleans and Galveston 3.3. Carnival Pride’s 7-night from Baltimore and Odyssey of the Seas’ 7-night from New York each had 3 port days and 4 at sea, and one of Odyssey’s three “ports” was Port Canaveral.
That is the real trade in the drive-versus-fly decision. Driving to Baltimore saves airfare and buys you four sea days out of seven. Flying to San Juan costs airfare and buys you two extra islands and sometimes three. Neither is wrong — plenty of people book the Baltimore sailing precisely because they want four days by the pool — but you should choose it on purpose, not because the closer port was the default.
What about the short-cruise ports: Jacksonville, Mobile, Palm Beach?
If the nearest port to you is Jacksonville, Mobile or Palm Beach, the question is not which Caribbean, it is whether you want the Caribbean at all. Jacksonville’s 4 sailings in the sample week were all 4- and 5-night Bahamas loops (Carnival Elation and Norwegian Dawn to Celebration Key, Half Moon Cay, Nassau, Freeport and Great Stirrup Cay). Palm Beach was Margaritaville at Sea on 3- and 4-night Freeport and Nassau runs. Mobile had one departure: Carnival Spirit’s 8-night to Key West, Celebration Key, Half Moon Cay and Nassau.
Mobile is worth a footnote for anyone in Alabama, Mississippi or Tennessee: the Spirit has been seasonal (it left for six months in April 2026 and was due back October 24, 2026), and Carnival has said Carnival Valor replaces it in May 2027 for year-round sailing. Even then, expect the Gulf and the Bahamas, not the islands.

Is it worth driving to a different port? The Atlanta math
We plan from Canton, Georgia, so Atlanta is my worked example — and it is the drive market with the most options, because Florida is one long day south. Road miles below are OpenStreetMap routing from downtown Atlanta; the hours are those miles at a 65-mph average with no stops, so add your gas-and-bathroom reality on top. Parking is the port’s own daily rate where the port publishes one.
| Port | Road miles from Atlanta | Hours at 65 mph | Port parking, per day | What 7 nights reaches (Feb 2027 week) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile | 329 | 5.1 | not verified for this piece — check with the terminal | Bahamas only (one 8-night) |
| Jacksonville | 362 | 5.6 | $17, tax included (JAXPORT, Nov 2, 2026) | 4–5 night Bahamas only |
| Tampa | 456 | 7.0 | $18 + $9.99 booking fee (per Cruzely, Dec 15, 2025) | Western only; Southern on 11 nights |
| New Orleans | 470 | 7.2 | not verified for this piece | Western only |
| Port Canaveral | 490 | 7.5 | $20 + tax (since Oct 1, 2025) | Bahamas, Western and Eastern; Southern on 8–9 nights |
| Fort Lauderdale | 645 | 9.9 | $25 (Port Everglades, Nov 2, 2026) | Everything; Southern on 8+ nights |
| Miami | 662 | 10.2 | $28 garages C–G, $35 garages A–B (PortMiami, Nov 2, 2026) | Everything; Southern on 9+ nights |
| Galveston | 813 | 12.5 | $179 for 7 days in the economy lots, about $26/day (per Cruzely, Oct 5, 2026) | Western only |
| Charleston | 300 | 4.6 | — | No homeport ships since Carnival Sunshine’s last sailing on Dec 30, 2024 |
Charleston is the one that stings. It is the closest port to Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh, and it has had no homeported ship since Carnival Sunshine’s final departure on December 30, 2024 (the ship moved to Norfolk). The port still takes transit calls, but you cannot start a cruise there.
Drive vs. fly for a family of four, worked out
Drive to Port Canaveral for a 7-night. 490 miles each way is 980 miles. At 25 mpg that is 39 gallons; at Georgia’s $3.58 average for regular on November 2, 2026, that is $140 in gas. A Saturday-to-Saturday cruise is 8 calendar days of parking at $20, so $160 before tax. Call it $300 before a hotel night, and you have your own car for the Walmart run the night before.
Fly to San Juan for a 7-night Southern. The U.S. average round-trip domestic fare in the second quarter of 2026 was $549 per person (Bureau of Transportation Statistics, released September 29, 2026). Four of those is $2,196, before checked bags and two taxi rides. Your actual fare could be well under that on a sale or well over it in February — plug your own number in — but the gap between $300 and $2,200 is the point.
Nearest-port cheat sheet: what your closest port can and can’t do
Same routing, same sample week, for the drive markets around us. “Nearest” is by road miles; the last column is the shortest drive to a port that sells the Eastern Caribbean on 7 nights (Port Canaveral is the northernmost one).

The summer catch: half the ships leave
I ran the same 13 ports for a summer week, July 17–23, 2027, and the count fell from 133 sailings to 80. Fort Lauderdale dropped from 25 departures to 7 as the premium lines moved to Alaska and Europe. The Southern Caribbean from Florida shrank to two 8-nighters from Miami (Carnival Magic and Celebrity Beyond), and San Juan had one departure, Grandeur of the Seas on 7 nights. Port Canaveral (22), Miami (20) and Galveston (7) held up, almost all Bahamas and Western. For a summer-break family the menu is about half the size the brochure implies.

How I’d decide
Three questions, in this order. First, which islands do you actually want? If the answer is Cozumel, Roatán or Grand Cayman, drive to the nearest Gulf or Florida port and stop reading. If it is St. Thomas or St. Maarten, you need Port Canaveral or south. If it is Aruba, St. Lucia or Barbados, you are either flying to San Juan or buying an 8th and 9th night out of Florida. Second, how many sea days do you want? Four out of seven from Baltimore is a floating resort week; one or two out of seven from San Juan is an island-hopping week. Both are great vacations, and they are not the same vacation. Third, what does the gap cost? Run the drive math above against a real fare for your dates, and remember that extra cruise nights are often cheaper than four plane tickets.
The same rule I use for Sandals and Beaches applies here: let the total cost of getting there help pick the destination, because part of the vacation is getting there. Drive to Port Canaveral and put the saved airfare into a balcony — unless St. Lucia was the whole point, in which case fly, and don’t apologize for it.
FAQ
Can you cruise to the Eastern Caribbean from Galveston?
Not on a 7-night cruise, and in the February 2027 week we sampled, not at all. Ten of the eleven Galveston sailings went west to Mexico, Honduras and Belize; the one exception was Carnival Jubilee’s 8-night to the Bahamas. St. Thomas is about 1,760 nautical miles from Galveston in a straight line, roughly four sea days each way.
Which cruise port is closest to Atlanta?
Mobile, Alabama at about 329 road miles, then Jacksonville at 362 — but Port Canaveral at 490 miles is the closest port that sells Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises on 7 nights. Charleston is nearer (300 miles) but has had no homeported cruise ship since December 30, 2024.
How many nights do you need to reach Aruba from Florida?
Eight at a minimum. Legend of the Seas (Fort Lauderdale) and Carnival Vista (Port Canaveral) both reached Aruba and Curaçao on 8-night sailings in the sample week; Explorer of the Seas and Celebrity Silhouette needed 9 to add Bonaire. No 7-night Florida cruise reached the ABC islands.
Is it cheaper to drive or fly to a cruise port?
Driving wins by a wide margin whenever you are within a day’s drive: from Atlanta, 980 round-trip miles to Port Canaveral is about $140 in gas and $160 in port parking for an 8-day stay, against roughly $2,200 in airfare for four at the Q2 2026 average round-trip fare of $549. The real cost of driving is the sea days, not the dollars — the drive-to ports average 3 to 4 port days on a 7-night, San Juan 5.6.
Do Baltimore and New York cruises go to the Caribbean?
On 7 and 8 nights they go to the Bahamas, with a Florida stop on the way. Carnival Pride from Baltimore did Nassau, Half Moon Cay and Celebration Key; Odyssey of the Seas and Norwegian Bliss from New York stopped at Port Canaveral and then the Bahamas. Norfolk’s Carnival Sunshine was the only mid-Atlantic ship to reach Grand Turk and the Dominican Republic, on 8 nights.
What this means if you’re booking
- Decide the islands first, then the port. On 7 nights: Gulf ports = Western, Florida = Western or Eastern, San Juan = Southern. Northern ports = the Bahamas.
- If the Southern Caribbean is the goal and you want to drive, price the 8- and 9-night sailings from Port Canaveral and Fort Lauderdale before you price four plane tickets.
- Count sea days before you count dollars: 4 of 7 from Baltimore and New York, 3 to 4 from the Gulf and Florida, 1 to 2 from San Juan. Book the one you actually want.
