The short version:
  • Three Caribbean tender ports are still tender-only for every ship in 2026: Grand Cayman (64% of Cayman voters rejected a pier on April 30, 2025), Belize City and Princess Cays. Half Moon Cay is now half-and-half: Carnival ships dock at a new pier since June 1, 2026; Holland America ships still tender.
  • If you are not on a ship-sold tour, plan to be ashore 45 to 90 minutes after the ship’s published arrival. Ship tours and suite guests tender first; a tender holds about 200 people and takes about 30 minutes to load.
  • Book an independent tour that starts at least 90 minutes after the ship’s arrival time and ends at least 2 hours before departure. On a 10:30 to 5:30 Grand Cayman call that leaves about 4 hours 45 minutes of usable time, not 7.
  • If the tender is cancelled, a cruise-line excursion refunds automatically. Independent operators vary: Shore Excursions Group and ToursByLocals refund in full, most local operators want 24 hours’ notice, and Viator’s “Worry-Free” label means extra support, not a written refund. Get the policy in writing before you pay.

You booked a Caribbean cruise, you found a stingray tour you like better than the ship’s version, and then you noticed the word “tender” next to Grand Cayman on your itinerary. Now you have two questions nobody on the booking site answers: when will I actually be standing on the dock, and who eats the money if the ship can’t put the tenders in the water? This guide answers both for the Caribbean tender ports you are most likely to hit in 2026, with the port hours, the tender math and each operator’s written policy as of October 26, 2026.

Which Caribbean cruise ports are still tender ports in 2026?

Fewer than you’d think, and the list changed twice in the last year. A tender port is any stop where the ship anchors offshore and you ride a smaller boat to land. On a typical 7-night Western Caribbean loop out of Florida, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Roatán, Falmouth, Ocho Rios, Nassau, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Castaway Cay and Grand Turk are all piers. The ones that still make you ride a boat are below.

PortWho tenders in 2026Ride and timingWhat changed
George Town, Grand CaymanEvery ship, every lineAbout 10 minutes ship to pier (5 to 20 depending on where the ship anchors). Ships typically arrive 7 to 8 AM and leave 3 to 5 PM; Disney Treasure’s 2026 calls are listed at 10:00–10:30 AM to 5:30–6:00 PM. Six ships and about 20,400 passengers are scheduled for Dec 15, 2026.A $240 million pier plan was voted down 64% to 29% in the April 30, 2025 referendum. In winter nor’westers the ship may anchor at Spotts on the south side instead; operators run shuttle buses from there.
Belize CityEvery ship calling at Belize City (Norwegian uses its own Harvest Caye pier, 115 miles south)Ships anchor about 2 miles out; 15 to 20 minutes each way to the Fort Street Tourism Village.A private pier (Port Coral) has been promised since 2021 and still was not in regular use on Oct 26, 2026 itineraries. If your itinerary says “tender,” believe it.
Half Moon Cay (RelaxAway), BahamasHolland America ships; a third Carnival ship when two are already on the pierHolland America tender takes about 20 minutes. Carnival ships dock at the new north-side pier (up to 2 ships) and ride a free tram to the beach.Pier opened June 1, 2026 (Carnival Sunrise was first alongside). The $125 Beach Club day pass that opened Oct 19, 2026 includes priority tendering for Holland America guests.
Princess Cays, EleutheraPrincess and Carnival ships20 to 30 minutes each way.No pier announced.
Great Stirrup Cay, BahamasUsually nobody; a second Norwegian ship on the same day may still tenderPier holds 2 large ships. On Dec 28, 2025 Norwegian Getaway docked while Norwegian Gem tendered.First ship docked Dec 28, 2025. Regent and Oceania ships can use it too.

Small-ship and luxury itineraries add a second tier of anchorages (St. Barts, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Bequia, Isla Catalina off La Romana, Cayo Levantado in Samaná Bay); the same timing rules apply, just with smaller boats and shorter lines.

What it means: Grand Cayman is the one that matters. It is on most Western Caribbean itineraries, it is the port where the most people book outside the ship, and Cayman’s own voters just guaranteed it stays a tender port for years. Plan that day differently from the pier days.

How does tendering actually work, and who gets off first?

The ship drops anchor, the local tender boats (at Grand Cayman they are larger than the ship’s own lifeboats) tie up alongside, and the crew works through a priority list. Guests on excursions sold by the cruise line go first: they meet in a lounge and are walked down as a group. Suite guests go next on most lines (Celebrity’s Retreat and Disney’s concierge guests have priority tender tickets). Everyone else gets a numbered ticket or a boarding group and waits for their number to be called.

The numbers that set your morning: a Grand Cayman tender holds about 200 people, loading takes around 30 minutes, and the crossing itself is 5 to 10 minutes. Disney guests report the independent-traveler line forming at the Walt Disney Theatre, with the first independent tender leaving about 30 minutes after the ship’s arrival on a good day and an hour or more on a busy one. One Disney Fantasy guest in June waited about an hour for a tender, two hours after the ship arrived. A Disney Dream guest in late November was in the theatre at 8:55 AM and on the island by 9:25.

Coming back is simpler: tenders run continuously until everyone is aboard, so you will not be stranded if you are at the pier before the last tender. But the last tender time is announced on board, not on the website, and the afternoon return line can be long when four ships are in. Local guidance is to be at the terminal at least 30 minutes before all-aboard, and most lines put all-aboard 30 to 60 minutes before the published departure.

What it means: The published arrival time is when the ship anchors, not when you step ashore. If you are planning your own day, the honest arrival time is roughly 45 to 90 minutes later.

How do I time an independent excursion around the tender?

Work backward from the departure, not forward from the arrival. Here is the math for the hardest case on the 2026 schedule: Disney Treasure at Grand Cayman. The Cayman port schedule lists it at 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Dec 15, 2026; cruisetimetables.com lists the same ship’s Nov–Dec calls at 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM. I used the tighter one. Either way the itinerary calls it a 7-to-8-hour day.

  • Ship anchors 10:30. Port Adventure groups tender first. Realistic first independent tender: 11:00. On the pier: about 11:15.
  • All-aboard will be around 5:00 PM. The last tender runs before that, so be at the tender pier by 4:00 to keep a 30-minute cushion for the line.
  • Usable window: 11:15 to 4:00, which is 4 hours 45 minutes. Ride the third tender instead of the first and you are down to about 3 hours 45 minutes.

A 3-hour Stingray City trip that starts at noon fits with about 45 minutes of slack, and only if the operator’s office is within a 10-minute walk of the tender landing. A 4-hour island tour starting at 11:30 does not fit, however good the reviews are. That is the whole trick: the tour has to fit inside the pink bar below, not the blue one.

Chart: usable shore time at Grand Cayman on a tender day for a Disney Treasure 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM call: 420 minutes published, about 285 minutes realistic for independent plans, about 225 minutes if you ride the third tender
The schedule says 7 hours. An independent tour has to fit inside the pink bar. Chart: CaribbeanMag, as of Oct 26, 2026.

Four rules that fall out of that math, and they hold at Belize City and Princess Cays too, with the tender ride stretched to 15 to 30 minutes each way:

  • Start time: arrival plus 90 minutes. If the ship arrives at 8:00, book the 9:30 departure, not the 8:30. Many Cayman operators run a dedicated “cruise ship schedule” and will tell you which departure matches your ship; ask.
  • End time: departure minus 2 hours. That covers the walk back, the return line and a late boat.
  • Meeting point within 10 minutes of the landing. At George Town the three tender terminals (Royal Watler, North and South) are all on the waterfront; Captain Marvin’s check-in office, for example, is half a block to two blocks from the terminal. A taxi to Seven Mile Beach is about US$24 for up to 4 people each way, so an operator that picks you up at the pier saves both money and a decision.
  • Check where the ship is anchoring the night before. When a winter nor’wester pushes ships to Spotts on the south side, your 10-minute walk becomes a shuttle ride, and some calls get cancelled outright. Cayman Cabana’s owner told the Cayman Compass on Feb 3, 2026 that “there have been several cruise ship cancellations because of the bad weather” in the previous month alone.
What it means: On a tender day, the tour that starts an hour later is usually the better tour. You give up 60 minutes of beach to get a guarantee you’ll be on it.

What happens to my prepaid tour if the tender is cancelled?

This is the part people get wrong, in both directions. Some assume everything is refundable; some assume they lose it all. The truth depends entirely on who sold you the tour, so here is what each kind of seller has in writing.

Who you booked withShip can’t tender or skips the portYou’re late back to the shipCancellation window
The cruise line’s own excursionRefunded automatically to your onboard account. Royal Caribbean’s FAQ: “A refund will be given if a shore excursion is cancelled due to a ship missing a port of call.” Disney cancels and refunds Port Adventures when it skips a port. The ship waits for its own tours.Royal Caribbean: up to 48 hours before port arrival without penalty. Disney: most Port Adventures up to 3 days before sailing; some prepaid ones are non-refundable and say so.
Shore Excursions Group“If your port of call is cancelled, you’ll receive a full refund.”Gets you to the next port, pays lodging and meals, plus $1,000 per person. Not stated on the public page; check your voucher.
ToursByLocalsFull refund if the ship can’t dock at the booked port, no claim needed (policy dated Sep 22, 2025).Arranges and pays lodging and transport to the next feasible port.Varies by guide; shown on each tour.
Viator “Worry-Free Shore Excursion”Covered products “offer extra support if the ship misses a port-of-call.” The written refund terms live in Viator’s T&Cs, not on the listing.Covered if the tour runs late or you miss the ship through no fault of your own.Full refund on most experiences if cancelled at least 24 hours ahead.
A local operator, booked directVaries. The Captain Marvin’s listing, for example, states only a 24-hour cancellation rule and a Spotts shuttle plan; a no-show-ship refund is not on the page. You are on your own; good operators keep an eye on all-aboard times.Typically 24 hours before departure for a full refund.
Travel insuranceMissed-port coverage exists on some policies and not others; read the schedule of benefits for “itinerary change.”“Missed connection” benefits sometimes apply.n/a

Two things the table can’t show. First, the cruise contract lets the line “omit or change any or all port calls, arrival or departure times, with or without notice, for any reason whatsoever” (that is Carnival’s wording; the others are similar), so a skipped tender port earns you a small port-fee credit and nothing else from the line. Second, the independent operator’s refund promise is only as good as the email you can show. Before you pay, ask one question in writing: “If my ship doesn’t tender in, do I get a full refund?” A yes in writing settles the matter. Silence tells you something too.

What it means: A ship-sold tour is an insurance policy you pay for with time and money. A well-chosen independent operator with a written no-ship-no-charge rule gives you most of the same protection, usually for 20 to 40% less.

Ship excursion or on your own at a tender port: how I’d decide

I hate wasting money, but time is money too, and on a cruise you only get so many port days. So I don’t treat this as a ship-versus-independent religion. I treat it as four questions.

How much of the day is at stake? On an 8 AM to 4 PM Grand Cayman call with a 2-hour snorkel trip, the independent tour is low risk: book the 10:00 departure, be back by 1:00, and you still have a Seven Mile Beach afternoon. On a 10:30 arrival with a 4-hour commitment, the ship’s tour is the only version that doesn’t gamble the day.

Is it a 6-ship day? The Cayman port schedule shows six ships and about 20,400 passengers in George Town on Dec 15, 2026, and Dec 1 and Dec 29 are nearly as busy. Independent guests tender last on every one of them. On those days a ship tour’s priority tender is worth real minutes.

Does the operator have the refund rule in writing? If yes, the price gap (Cruise Mummy’s May 2026 review of Shore Excursions Group found savings of around 40% versus the ship’s version) is pure savings. If no, you are self-insuring a cancelled port for a few dollars off.

Is it a private island? At Half Moon Cay, Princess Cays and Great Stirrup Cay the cruise line sells everything on shore, so the only decision is whether to pay for priority tendering. Holland America’s new $125 Beach Club pass at Half Moon Cay is mostly that; Norwegian’s Great Tides waterpark is a separate per-person pass whether you tender or dock.

What this means if you’re booking

  • Look up your ship’s actual port hours for your date, not the generic “7 AM to 4 PM” on the itinerary page. A 10:30 arrival changes everything.
  • At Grand Cayman, Belize City and Princess Cays, book the independent departure that is 90 minutes after arrival and ends 2 hours before departure, with a meeting point you can walk to in 10 minutes.
  • Pay nothing non-refundable until you have the no-ship-no-charge rule in writing. If the operator won’t give it, the ship’s tour is the cheaper risk.

Caribbean tender ports: FAQ

Is Grand Cayman still a tender port in 2026?

Yes, and it will be for years: Cayman voters rejected the George Town pier plan 64% to 29% on April 30, 2025. Every ship, including the newest Royal Caribbean and Disney ships, anchors off George Town and tenders guests to one of three waterfront terminals.

How long does it take to tender at Grand Cayman?

About 10 minutes on the water and 30 to 90 minutes of waiting, depending on whether you are on a ship tour. The boats hold about 200 people and take roughly 30 minutes to load; independent guests board after excursion groups and suite guests.

Do I get a refund if my cruise skips a tender port?

For a cruise-line excursion, yes, automatically. For the cruise itself, no: the contract lets the line skip ports for any reason, and you typically get only a port-fee credit. For an independent tour it depends on the seller; Shore Excursions Group and ToursByLocals refund in full, local operators vary.

Which Caribbean private islands still require a tender?

Princess Cays for every ship, Half Moon Cay for Holland America ships (Carnival ships dock at the pier that opened June 1, 2026), and Great Stirrup Cay only when a second Norwegian ship shares the day. Castaway Cay, Lookout Cay, Perfect Day at CocoCay, Ocean Cay and Bimini all have piers.

Will the ship wait for me if my independent tour runs late?

No. The ship waits only for its own excursions. Tenders keep running until the last announced time, so build in a 2-hour cushion before departure and pick an operator that advertises a return-to-ship guarantee.

Does a ship excursion get me off the ship faster at a tender port?

Yes, that is its main practical advantage. Ship-sold groups tender first on every major line, which can be worth 30 to 60 minutes on a 6-ship morning in George Town.
