7 Mistakes First-Time Sandals Guests Make (And How to Avoid Every One)
After personally visiting all 17 Sandals resorts and helping hundreds of couples plan their stays, I’ve seen the same mistakes over and over again. Most of them are completely avoidable — and the difference between a disappointing trip and a genuinely unforgettable one often comes down to a few decisions made before you ever board the plane.
Here are the 7 most common first-timer mistakes at Sandals, and exactly how to avoid each one.

Mistake #1: Choosing the Resort Before Choosing Your Room Category
This is the most expensive mistake first-timers make. They fall in love with the most famous (and priciest) Sandals property — like Sandals Royal Barbados or Sandals St. Vincent — but their budget only allows for a standard Luxury room at that resort.
What they don’t realize: a butler suite at a mid-tier Sandals property often costs less than a standard room at a flagship resort — and delivers a dramatically better experience with a dedicated personal butler team, priority restaurant access, and in-room check-in.
The fix: Decide what room level you can comfortably afford first. Then find the best resort at that price point. A butler suite at Sandals Grenada or Sandals Halcyon Beach will beat a standard room at any other Sandals every time.
Mistake #2: Not Making Restaurant Reservations on Day One
Sandals advertises unlimited dining at all their restaurants — and that’s true. But the most popular specialty restaurants (the French bistro, the Japanese teppanyaki, the steakhouse) fill up fast, sometimes within hours of check-in at busy properties.
Guests who don’t book on arrival day often spend the week eating at the same two or three restaurants because everything else is full.
The fix: The moment you check in, go straight to the dining reservation desk (or have your butler do it if you have butler service) and book your preferred restaurants for every night of your stay. Do it before you unpack. Do it before you change into your swimsuit. This one step will transform your dining experience.

Mistake #3: Packing Like You Would for Any Vacation
Sandals has dress codes at their specialty restaurants — and they’re enforced. Showing up in flip-flops and a tank top will get you turned away from the nicer restaurants, which is deeply frustrating when you’ve booked a reservation weeks in advance.
Most specialty restaurants require “elegant casual” or “resort elegant” attire for dinner. For men, that typically means closed-toe shoes, long pants, and a collared shirt. For women, a dress, skirt, or dressy pants ensemble. Jeans are often fine; shorts are usually not.
The fix: Pack at least two or three dinner outfits that meet the elegant casual standard. Check the specific dress code for your resort before you travel — it varies slightly by property. Your travel advisor can send you the full list.
Mistake #4: Ignoring the “Stay at One, Play at All” Program
One of Sandals’ most underused benefits: at most island destinations, your room key grants you access to visit — and eat and drink at — all nearby sister resorts during your stay.
In Jamaica, that means access to up to four resorts. In Saint Lucia, you can visit both Grande St. Lucian and Halcyon Beach. Guests who don’t know about this program stay at one resort all week and miss out on dozens of additional restaurants, pools, and beaches.
The fix: Before your trip, ask which resorts are included at your destination and how transfers work (usually free shuttle or water taxi). Plan at least one day to visit a sister resort for lunch or dinner — it completely changes the scope of what you experience.
Mistake #5: Booking the Cheapest Dates Instead of the Best Dates
Value season (June through November) offers real savings — 20 to 35 percent off peak rates — but it overlaps with Caribbean hurricane season. That doesn’t mean you’ll have a bad trip. Weather is frequently beautiful during these months. But it does mean you need travel insurance, and you should understand what happens if a storm affects your resort or flights.
The bigger issue: some first-timers book the absolute cheapest week they can find and end up during peak school holiday periods at neighboring resorts, or at a time when their preferred resort runs reduced staffing.
The fix: Work with a Sandals specialist to identify the sweet spot — shoulder season weeks (late April/May or late November/early December) that offer good pricing without high season crowds or hurricane risk. Always add travel insurance, especially for Caribbean travel.

Mistake #6: Skipping Travel Insurance
Sandals vacations represent a significant investment — often $4,000 to $10,000 or more per couple. Without travel insurance, a flight cancellation, medical issue, or — as we saw in 2025 — a hurricane can leave you with nothing.
Post-Hurricane Melissa, we had dozens of clients who were grateful they’d listened to us about insurance. Those without it faced significant losses. Those with comprehensive coverage were fully protected — and many were rebooked on beautiful trips within days.
The fix: Always purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy that includes trip cancellation, medical evacuation, and trip interruption. “Cancel for any reason” upgrades are worth considering for expensive trips. Your Sandals advisor can recommend reputable providers.
Mistake #7: Not Using a Sandals Specialist
This one might seem self-serving coming from a travel agency, but hear me out: Sandals is a complex brand with 17 different resorts, multiple room categories at each, constantly changing promotions, and real differences in experience quality between properties.
A specialist who’s visited all 17 resorts knows which property has the best beach for your travel style, which room categories are genuinely worth the upgrade, which current promotions can be stacked, and which restaurants to prioritize at your specific resort. That knowledge is worth real money — and in most cases, using a specialist costs you nothing because the commission comes from Sandals, not from you.
Booking direct through Sandals.com gives you no advantage over booking through a specialist. You pay the same price. The difference is you get professional guidance — or you don’t.
The fix: Work with a Sandals Certified Resort Specialist, ideally one who has Platinum Elite or Diamond Elite status (meaning they’ve booked significant volume and have extensive firsthand resort experience). The consultation is free.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the biggest mistake first-time Sandals guests make?
The most common and costly mistake is choosing a resort before deciding on a room category. Many first-timers book a standard room at an expensive flagship resort, not realizing they could get butler service at a different Sandals for the same price or less — with a dramatically better experience.
Do you need to make dining reservations at Sandals?
You don’t need reservations at most casual restaurants, but specialty restaurants fill up quickly — often on the first day of arrival. Make reservations for the entire week at the dining desk as soon as you check in, before doing anything else.
Is it worth using a travel agent for Sandals?
Yes — using a certified Sandals specialist costs you nothing (Sandals pays the commission) and gives you access to expert guidance, current promotions, and firsthand resort knowledge that can make a significant difference in which resort and room you choose.
