Here is where things stand with MSC Poesia detained in Miami: the U.S. Coast Guard held the ship at PortMiami on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and on November 3 MSC Cruises canceled the 11-night Caribbean cruise with more than 2,000 guests already aboard. Every guest gets the fare back plus a future cruise credit worth 100% of it, and the ship’s next departure on the schedule is one week away, on November 12.
- Coast Guard Sector Miami detained the ship (capacity 3,223 guests) on November 1. MSC canceled the sailing just after 10 a.m. on November 3, about 41 hours after the scheduled 5 p.m. departure.
- Guests get a 100% refund of the cruise fare within 14 days, plus a future cruise credit equal to 100% of the fare that has to be booked by November 2, 2027.
- The next MSC Poesia sailings from Miami are November 12 (10 nights), November 22 (11 nights) and December 3 (10 nights). No change to any of them had been announced as of November 4.
- This is rare. The Coast Guard examined passenger ships 389 times in 2025 and detained none of them.
Why was MSC Poesia detained in Miami?
Nobody official has said, and I’m not going to guess. On the record: the ship was due to leave PortMiami at 5 p.m. on November 1 for Ocho Rios, Cartagena, Colón, Puerto Limón, Roatán and Belize City, returning November 12. Guests boarded. The ship never left the pier.
The Coast Guard ran what it called an expanded Port State Control examination, the inspection it uses to check foreign-flagged ships against international safety rules and U.S. regulations. Capt. Frank Florio, commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami, said inspectors “identified deficiencies with systems on board the vessel that we are addressing with MSC.” The ship stays put until those are corrected and it is cleared to sail.
MSC calls it “a regulatory matter” and told guests in writing that “the health and safety of our guests and crew were never compromised.” Neither side has named the systems involved. The Maritime Executive reported that the ship’s previous Coast Guard exam, in April 2026, noted issues with the readiness of lifesaving appliances without a detention; nobody has tied that to this week.
How unusual is it for the Coast Guard to detain a cruise ship?
Very. The Coast Guard’s 2025 Port State Control report counts 8,999 exams of foreign-flagged ships and 77 detentions, a rate of 0.85%. Passenger ships had 389 of those exams. Inspectors wrote up at least one deficiency on 205 of them, which is 52.7%, and detained zero.
What do guests on the canceled cruise get?
The letter delivered to staterooms on November 3, as reported by Cruise Industry News, Cruise Hive and Cruise Law News:

Is the November 12 MSC Poesia cruise still sailing?
As of November 4, no change to it had been announced and no Coast Guard release had been made public. Both of those can change in an afternoon. These are the next four departures on the published schedule, all round trip from Miami:

The detention applies to one of MSC’s record four Miami ships this winter. No report names a problem on MSC World America, MSC Meraviglia or MSC Seaside.
What I’d do if I were booked on MSC Poesia
I hate wasting money, but time is money; you only get so many vacation days. The refund and the credit give the money back. They don’t give the week back.
Don’t cancel on your own. Cancel inside the penalty window and you pay the penalty in your booking terms. If MSC cancels, the fare comes back.
Make the rest of the trip changeable today. Check whether your airfare can be changed without a fee (basic economy usually can’t) and the cutoff on your pre-cruise hotel. Read what your travel insurance says about a sailing canceled by the cruise line, because policies differ. Keep every receipt.
It is also why I like a port you can drive to. Miami is 662 road miles from Atlanta in our closest-cruise-port analysis, with PortMiami parking at $28 to $35 a day. When a sailing is canceled at the pier, a drive-in family is out the gas and a parking bill. A fly-in family of four has four tickets to rebook.
What this means if you’re booking
- Sailing November 12: confirm the status in your MSC booking or with your travel advisor before you leave for Miami, and again the morning you travel. You have seven days of cushion as of today.
- Sailing November 22 or later: nothing to do yet except make sure your flights and hotel can move, and watch for word that the ship has been cleared.
- Shopping for a winter cruise from Miami: I would not rule out MSC’s other three ships over this, and I would not book any cruise, on any line, with flights that can’t be changed.
