A bounty of reef life swarms in these warm, nutrient-rich waters. Scores of butterfly, queen angel, damsel and parrotfish dart by. Yet nothing can equal swimming side by side with the majestic, mysterious Manta Ray. Tobago offers the best of both worlds, Caribbean Sea diving on one coast and Atlantic diving on the other. Most of the diving done in Tobago are drift dives. Some of the diving can be done on the north east coast around Speyside and Batteaux Bay. Some of the famous dive spots include Manta City, Japanese Gardens, Keleston Drain, London Bridge, Blackjack Hole, Buccoo Reef, The Shallows, The Sisters, Paradise, Diver's Dream and Diver's Thirst. Dive Sites:Manta City
Japanese Gardens lies off the western tip of Goat Island. It's another ideal spot to see mantas! The surface is usually a bit choppy and there is a mild current on the bottom. At some points during the dive, you'll be picked up and "flown" around some of the bends. WILD! Lots of soft corals, sponges and huge vases abound this dive. Kelliston Drain Kelliston Drain is noted for its famous brain coral. It is rated as the world's largest brain coral, measuring some 16ft wide and 12ft high! It's not uncommon to find nurse sharks and more mantas on this dive!
London Bridge A natural arch that extends down 40ft underwater. Here the water creates a sort of venturi effect and whips you through the arch. On the other side, it's calm and filled with large pelagics. Expect to find schooling Tarpons in the 4ft-8ft range! The Sisters Here is a group of small islands off Bloody Bay. It's about a 45 minute boat ride out to the site in usually choppy waters. This is a wall dive and worth the time it takes to get there. It is NOT for the beginning diver as this dive usually has strong currents or surges. Blackjack Hole
Book Ends Book Ends lies just south of Little Tobago. At one part during the dive, you'll come up to some heavy wave action on the surface. The water is churned up and high with energy. From below, it takes on a cloudy look, much like storm clouds. Don't hold your breath when you run into the large school of HUGE tarpons drifting among the clouds. On all the dives, you're sure to be entertained by large PARROT FISH, TRUMPET FISH, JACKS and GROUPER. On some of the dive sites, you might run into large TARPONS, REEF SHARKS, EAGLE and MANTA RAYS. I've never seen such a diversity of fish-life in one area. Non-Diving Spouse Activities: Tobago is a good place to bring a spouse who is not a diver or water enthusiast. There are many topside activities to keep occupied and happy. While you are diving, non - divers in your group can enjoy a day at Pigeon Point Beach. At the heart of the Buccoo Reef National Park, Pigeon Point offers a day out in paradise. Snorkel or swim in the crystal clear water, relax under a palm tree, water kayak rentals, parasailing, golfing, shopping, jetskies, enjoy a West Indian lunch or take a cruise aboard Loafer Cruises, the island largest open deck catamaran. A perfect way to relax after a dive ! Tobago Dive Shops: Click Here! |
